Mimi Augustin: Meet the Playwright Ep. 1
In anticipation of the release of Episode 1 of Boston Podcast Players on July 3, we will get to know the playwright of the featured play, Shameless Breathing.
Milourdes (Mimi) Augustin was born and raised in Haiti and moved to Boston with her family at 9 years old. Writing has always been a big part of her life. In high school, she was the recipient of several poetry awards and continued to write and perform her work through college.
After having her little dude, she discovered that her voice had changed. She started to explore playwriting and focusing on issues of mental illness and breaking free of stereotypes within her own community about mental health. Shameless Breathing explores the issues that women of all races, social and economic backgrounds face when it comes to discovering their truths and accepting the flaws and that make them who they are.
She has had several professional staged readings of her plays, including a staged reading overseas. In 2016, she was accepted to Company One’s PlayLab where she worked with Ilana Brownstein (and several awesome dramaturgs) to edit one of her plays. Prior to that, she was a writing member of the TCSquared Writing group as well as an independent playwrights group led by Catherine O’Neil.
